Pricing of Artwork and Illustrations

Many factors go into pricing my artwork - for example, the time taken to execute it, the medium, the research and skill level required. Illustrations are also priced according to how and where they will be used, and the type of copyright licence required. I provide obligation-free quotes for any commissioned illustrations. I also have some stock illustrations available at cheaper rates.

Copyright

Copyright is literally the "right to copy" an image. Copyright on illustrations can be purchased in two ways - by licensing or assigning copyright. These are like renting and buying, respectively. A copyright licence gives the purchaser the right to use the illustration under the terms of that licence, but ownership of the image remains with the illustrator. When copyright is assigned, the purchaser is buying full ownership of the copyright on the image, hence this is usually a more expensive option. If the artwork is in a traditional medium (such as a painting), then ownership of the original in its physical form is a separate issue to ownership of the copyright.

Commissioning an Illustration or Artwork

The creation of a commissioned piece usually involves an initial discussion of the project where I give the client a quote. I then proceed to create "roughs" - a sketch outline of the work - and adjust these until the client is happy for me to proceed to the final artwork. Often this is all done by email, with roughs provided as jpg or pdf files. In fact I have done illustrations for many clients that I have never met in person! The process may take days to months depending on the complexity of the artwork. The original artwork may be in traditional media or entirely digital, or a combination of both.
